The Riviera Maya EDITION at Kanai is a luxurious beachfront resort set within a 620-acre nature reserve in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, celebrated for its unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation. Positioned amidst a vibrant mangrove forest and the turquoise waters of the Mexican Caribbean, the resort provides guests with a unique and immersive experience in a biodiverse ecosystem.
With an average tropical climate of 80°F year-round, the resort’s location is adorned with diverse tropical flora, including rainforest plants, palms, cacti, tropical fruit trees, and flowers. The area is teeming with fauna, featuring iguanas, spider monkeys, raccoons, crocodiles, deer, white-nose coatis, Yucatan squirrels, and hundreds of bird species. The marine life in the Riviera Maya’s waters is equally abundant, home to sea turtles and a myriad of other species.
Construction in Kanai represents only 10% of the land, preserving 90% for flora and fauna conservation. Furthermore, to safeguard the mangrove’s vital role in the ecosystem, the resort was built atop hundreds of concrete pillars, preserving the natural mangrove root systems.
Flora Preservation – An on-site plant nursery nurtures mangrove seedlings in compliance with local environmental guidelines.
Environmental Monitoring – Ongoing monitoring tracks the ecosystem’s balance, assessing the quality of sea and underground water and its impact on vegetation and fauna.
Fauna Conservation – The resort contributes to crocodile conservation by relocating larger specimens safely. Also tracks the healthy environmental conditions for other species such as raccoons, coatis, squirrels and turtles, among others. The resort manages potentially harmful species, such as mosquitoes, through eco-friendly fumigation.
Waste Management – A robust waste management program is in place, ensuring responsible handling of solid, liquid, sanitary, and hazardous waste. The resort utilizes a Bio Digester to eliminate organic waste and actively recycles various materials.
Safety in Environmental Contingencies – The resort coordinates prevention and response actions for natural disasters like hurricanes, conducting annual staff training sessions prior to hurricane season.
Guest and Staff Education – Comprehensive training sessions on sustainability and environmental initiatives are provided to staff, and guided Eco-tours educate guests about local species and responsible tourism. The resort employs a dedicated biologist who leads these sustainability efforts, ensuring the preservation of the mangrove and surrounding environment. Specialized training is provided to staff on wildlife interaction safety, particularly with crocodiles, and staff promote the care of wildlife with our guest and staff by discouraging animal feeding on the premises.
